Stimulating student senses

During orientation the students will be watching very closely all of their sorroundings, exploring all corners, classrooms and labs. We should conduct cooking demos, create competitions, raffles, team building activities. Give them a small taste on what to expect when they start school.

Cara--

Students will be very excited to experience what they will be doing later in the program. It is extremely motivating for them to see some of the longer-term skills they will acquire.

I like it! A sneak peek is all anyone should need if they REALLY want to grab ahold of career college.

I think thats a great idea and what better for the students to see at the beginning what their outcomes will be in a few months or so...its a complete motivation factor!!!

I had not really ever thought about this, but what a wonderful idea! I work at a school with massage therapy, cosmotology, esthetics, etc. What better way to get new orientees enthused than with demonstrations of what they'll be doing in a few semesters!

Charles--

You are absolutely correct. Getting students involved (in and outside the clasroom) is a critical factor to student persistence. They should feel 'connected' as much as possible.

any time your getting a student in for the first time you should make every effort to get them involved with what there is to offer at your school. Let them become active in ways that make them comfortable.

This works well in any orientation. Not only should students be exposed to all types of learning (visual, audiory, kinesthetic, etc.) in orientation, but this should be continued once the students enter the classroom.

Carlos--

Great point about the students being especially observant at orientation. The more hands-on you can give them, the better.
