retention
We should get to know the student as a whole.
A student can not be effective if we do not address other issues that may inhibit the student from learning. Comprehension with our adult students can be an issue can be an issuen. If they are involed with students of younger ages, they may not grasp the informatuon as a quick.
Shonna,
We are all complex creatures and all facets of their lives affect their learning. Getting to know them as individuals makes a huge difference.

I agree with wanting to get to know the student as a whole. They are a unique individual with wants, needs and goals just as others. We need to be available to offer them the best learning experience in spite of what may be going on in their current life situation.
Student retention success, I believe occurs when the teachers and staff are all focused in on listening to the student's concerns and genuinely caring about their success. All the while building a strict learning environment and rewarding successfully learned objectives.
Gwen--
Excellent observation. Student retention is as much about assisting them in balancing/resolving the issues outside of the classroom as mastering the academic material.
While adult students may take longer to grasp the material, my experience is that once they understand it, they can apply it much faster because they have more life experience.
