student fears
students are afraid to make mistakes not knowing that we laern from our mistake
I agree that many students enter the classroom with fears. In my class we spend some time in the class room and in a lab setting working on engines. It appears the students that are the most afraid to get there hands on the engine and perform a task, are the students, when coached will be the best in the group. It just takes time to calm the fear of the unknown.
I applaud any student who is returning to school whether it is after high school or 10-25 years after that. All students come to new classes with much of the fear of failure and it is up to the instructor to calm them. The fear of the unknown is high and I always compliment them on making the choice to gain more knowledge and step out of their comfort zone and find new goals and success in their chosen field.
MOHAMMED ARIF,
I agree! And, having students speak with them adds a great deal of credibility. They expect 'us' to be encouraging, but other students are more believable.

I totally agree that most students have lot of fears entering the school. It is very important to ease those fears by talking to them about their fears. One of the best things to do is ask some successful students to speak to them. Comming from fellow students stduents tend to understand better that most of their fears are uncalled for.
april,
I had a statistics instructor (this was a required course) that purposely scared students away the first class so that only those who were determined stayed. Not a great tactic, especially since it was a required course.

yes agree we need to approach them slowly so they don't feel like there to old to learn.
Students begin classes with a dozen fears. I see many students who are returning to class after being out of school for 10 years or more. It is always the best practice to make them feel at ease. Some instructors will scare students with homework assignments, papers, etc.
