Do you think that enrolling new students every week is good?
I was wondering what everyone else thought about this? Is it difficult to have new students in your class every week?
I belive it is difficult when you do not have help. I THERE IS an assistant they can always take care of the new students
Enrolling new students each week is not optimal for a learning environment in which lessons must be planned and lectures presented. Doing so would hinder an instructors planning and organization as well as detract from the comradery that should develop within a class as a whole.
I agree--it's disconcerting, as an instructor, to suddenly see new names on my roster every week. Fortunately, I've only had to deal with this a couple of times. It's difficult for the student, I think, to play "catch-up" in an environment in which he/she is the newcomer.
Lisa--
It certainly makes it extremely difficult, as you point out. It sounds as if you don't separate students by the level they are at in their studies/skills. This must be also very difficult for the faculty.
Do you have any interventions in place to deal with this?
Susan
Enrolling students every week is horrible. It complicates the curriculum, and is counter productive towards a students development as it forces students to either have to go back to content they have already learned for the new students or forces new students to take part in content they aren't ready for.
It would depend on numerous factors. Most wheel programs cannot accept new students once the add/drop period has passed.
In my opinion, the first class a student takes should be made up of new students in the company of the very best instructors on staff.
