1st inpressions

Know one ever gets a chance for a second one. Teachers or students.

First impressions are amazingly hard to overcome in some occasions, but they can also cloak the abilities of a student who turns out to be one of your brightest. This happened to me in one of my classes. I had a student to appear in class with very flamboyant make-up and clothing and I just knew this student was not very serious. Needless to say, this student turned out to be one of my "BRIGHTEST."

I would like to think that this is not always true. But unfortunately it is more true than not. I have been guilty of this in my youth. I have become much more tolerant as I grow older.

I totally agree. First impressions are important but should not be the only thing that a student or faculty member remembers. Many times as has been said someone can have a bad day where everything has gone wrong and they don't present the most positive of impressions. I think both students and faculty should take a step back and wait a while before setting that first impression in stone. Maybe something will change. Many times it does. Just a thought.

The saying 'you only get one chance to make a first impression' is true. You can overcome a bad first impression, but it takes significantly longer to change that.

First impressions are very important and sometimes a poor one can leave a sour taste for someone. A second chance at this is sometimes hard to get.

I agree here and hope to avoid falling in. I feel picking the important battles and providing reminders as needed keeps them on track.

when we have a younger generation (y) they tend to base their impresions on the first day. but i do agree that nothing is ever set in stone both can chose to start over.

David--

That is so true! The atmosphere, how friendly and quickly we are greeted--it's the whole package. When considering the classroom setting, this is also very important. If things are disorganized it gives an entirely different perspective. Some in earlier posts have indicated how they arrive in class early and greet the students when they arrive. I don't think we can under estimate any of these seemingly small things.

I recently took a course in classroom management. In the course it was stated that first impressions are established in the first six seconds that a student walks into a classroom.

Try going into any establishment for the first time. It's amazing how first impressions influence us.

Jennifer, I agree with you. First impressions are very important, because this is where some people draw the line and do not look back if they experience a bad first impression.

Jennifer--

Excellent observation about being able to enhance a first impression, but not reverse it. Sometimes that's possible, but rarely.

Susan

1st impressions are important that's why I put my best foot forward and set my standard. You can always add to the first impression but you can not take away...

I agree they can make you or break you its where all the ground rules are laid

First impressions stick with us, and we tend to resort back to what we first thought about something if if does not go the way we think it should. That is why we should make an empressive first empression

I do not generally agree with this because everybody has a bad day once in a while. Both teacher and student can choose to start over with eachother if they choose to.

First impressions are vital, that is where the student gets a good feeling about his/her decision or a second thought about it may cross his/her mind,if the latter happens , it bwill take some time to get the comfort level back if they leave with a bad feeling

Susan,

No, I'm saying people put to much weight in the first impression.

Nathan--

Just to be sure I'm following you....are you suggesting people put too much effort in to making a good first impression?
