STUDENT CONNECTION WITH SCHOOL

IF THE STUDENT DO NOT FEEL LIKE THEY BELONG AT A SCHOOL OR THAT THE SCHOOL WILL HELP THEM ATTAIN THEIR GOAL THEY WILL NOT FEEL THE NEED TO ATTEND .

It is good if your school has a strong student council. It is a good way to stay in touch with the students and their needs. There are also many activities that are set up by them that keep the student body engaged.

I really like your answer to the student fear. I let the students know what it was like for me when I first got hired at the school and how I was lost in the building and I also take them on the field trip in the school. I get the students in their first class in the school and usually they do not remember all of the program directors offices so I show them again. Also the library and of course the lounge so they can feel a sense of more normalcy. Helping them get over the anxiety of all the new surroundings is a great help in getting students to settle themselves and get started with their new chosen career.I also know what high anxiety can do to a person if they do not calm it down so I pass the self talk along as well. I appreciate all your comments.

I can identify with the feeling of fear surrounding the unknown. Attending public School is different most of the time we attend school with children we grew up with experienced must of the up and downs with. Higher education is a new concept for most and the fear sets in due to the new envoirnment and not being able to identify with others. It is important that we make all students feel comfortable and needed as person and then as a student. Expressing appreciation goes along way and that will encourage students to try and the fear will eventually melt down. Techniques to reduce fear: (Self-talk)

1. Acknowledge fear
2. Analzy the fear
3. Face the fear(create a plan to reduce anxiety)
