The Academic dean presents at orientation, as well as the academic advisors, academic department chairs, financial aid, and student services representatives. The students also get their IDs and books at orientation.

That sounds like a great process. Kudos!

our addmission department is very warm & friendly ,they make sure they feel rigth at home they walk them ( students) personally to the classroom , they get intoduce with the instructor & classmates as well, this is highly important ,it gives us a chance to talk to them about why? and how? were different than other careers, keep in it simple but informative.
i beleive that the instructors have some input into their communication and interaction of students/
I don't have much to do with orientation, as I teach in one of the electives, it would be interesting to see though. Financial aid, Employment Services, Housing (including the onsite realty company) and student services handle most of orientation.
Student Services handles a majority of the business, but financial aid and student employment are biggies, too. When students are going thru the enrollment process, they are shown around ALL the departments and get an explanation of what each department is about.
The school i teach at,has basically the same protocal for our orientations as ms. coffino. In addition on their first day we get the orientations their tools and implements of thier respected trade. This usually gets them excited!
We do have "maps" that we give students, and they go to various locations to meet with Dept. Heads and other staff members. This helps to orient them to the physical surroundings, and gives them a chance to speak one-on-one.
We also have Student Services, Housing and Financial Aid at our disposal. If we can get a student to open up and give us some idea of what problems they are having we can lead them in the right direction. We also have Student Mentors that are available to send a student to, that we suspect is having problems that we may be able to help. He has the time to spend with the student to try to get into his head to see if there is anything we can do to help.
student services and financial aid are visited the most and are present at the student orientation so that students know what they can provide for them in the future
Financial aid have much interaction with the students. We try to involve them in orientiation with fun games and budget classes. The student leaves knowing that we will help them to find money for school which is one less big stress for them.
Our campus is also entertaining the idea of introducing our students to potential future employers.
My students have the most interaction with student services throughout their learning career. Contact information for student services is given within the first 5 slides of the new start powerpoint during lecture.
Faculty have the most interaction with students in my opinion.

It certainly sounds like you are taking care of your students! Do you have specific tactics you take for retention?
Susan
There is a handoff from Admissions to Student Services when a student "starts." Student Services runs the Orientation. Financial Aid, Employment Services and Education are all involved. Students recieve uniforms, ID and parking stickers. We are very focucsed on meeting the needs of our students at this point.
At our institution, all departments have an opportunity to introduce themselves to the new students. It's important to do so that the students experience familiarity as the days progress. They will not feel like outsiders because they will know the staff already. The registrar department, financial aid, fiscal and faculty are all personnel they will interact with throughout their time at the school.

This is really excellent to go in to classes. That way, you are reaching most everyone and it is in little 'sound bites' so they are more likely to retain the information.
Susan
The orientation is handled by the admissions staff and the theory instructors. The students that take my class have usually been enrolled for at least a year. I really have no part in orientation.
