We are just not instructors and they are just not students.... We are a family in the industry
I agree that interaction is very important. On a daily basis make my way to the student lounge to interact with students. I engage them because they are important. People in general understand that if you see them as important you will go out of your way the spend time with them. I shows that you care.
I constantly have past students stop me in the hall and ask questions and tell me how they are doing. Some even come back and visit the classroom after they have graduated to say hi and let me know what they are up to. No matter what I am doing, I will always stop and talk to them and let them know that I am always here if they need me and for them to keep in touch. It just helps the students understand that we do care, otherwise we would not be there.

That one-on-one attention is sure to help. Sounds like you are on a great path.

We need to be connected with our students when we can so they learn to trust us and keeping class fun is always a good thing and it keeps students coming back to learn.

How right you are...and unfortunately, that doesn't happen often enough. We are sometimes good at connecting regularly with individuals we work with, but keeping up connections outside of our institution helps to keep ideas fresh.

I agree we are a family in the industry. We need to encourage each other. We also can learn from each other. The only way for that to happen is to stay connected and involved.
