reinforcement

Our students need to be remninded (through our actions), that we are commited to thier progression.

Caroline--

Utilizing current students and alumni is always highly effective. They are very credible with our new students.

Susan

I agree that new students need to be reinforced that their labors will produce results. One good way of doing this is to have students who are doing well in the program share their experiences and reasons for their success. Secondly, including students at the orientation who have graduated and are working in the field will also provide strong reinforcement.

Yes sometimes students lose there focus about why they are here,we may have to reminde them about the reward that is comeing.

Mario--

The students you describe are truly a challenge. Without experience (work of personal responsibility), it is sometimes difficult to convince them how important it is to take this seriously. Do you have any specific things you do to help make this point?

Susan

students want to be reminded of their efforts and how their labor will produce fruit.most of them have had no job and never had to take responsibility for the things they have done. so reinforceing why they are in your class is a way to show the students that you are sincere in being a vital part of their success.

I agree having positive interactions with our students is one key to their success. Sometimes we focus constantly on the rules and the consequences for breaking them. I would rather catch a student doing something right and rewarding him/her for that action rather than always looking for the negative.

I agree. As I mentioned in another thread, I believe in positive reinforcment. By projecting a positive and supportive system in school, students will feel that we are there for them and can grow throughout their time at school.

I agree every school department needs to reinforce students learning and retention throughout their entire time on campus through our actions. Especially evident through our Student Services Department. They call students when absent; offer resources when needed; work with other departments as a team to benefit the students; walk students to other offices; smile, are friendly and know students names in the halls; plans off campus activities for families; coordinates on campus clubs and activities for students; is creative with suggestions; have convenient office hours; we also try to respond to signs of student unhappiness or distress to remind them we are there to help them succeed. As a staff we also utilize professional development to improve our skills. The students goal of graduation is our goal!
