Day One Expectations:
It is most important to set the expectations on the first day. Letting the students know what standard they we be held to, to be able to be successful. Also by adding life experiences keeps everyone on a positive outlook.
Thomas,
I agree. Everyone likes to know where the boundaries and expectations are up front.

I think setting a standard of professionalism the first day is very important to the flow of the class and also not falling off the path that youhave set. students seem to like structure to thier classes
Richard, once again I whole heartily agree … The first day of class sets the tone for the rest of the course. It is natural for both students and instructors to feel anticipation, excitement, anxiety, and uncertainty. To pique students' interest and anticipation, convey your enthusiasm for the material and stimulate students' curiosity about topics that will be covered during the course. To reduce students' anxiety and uncertainty, try to create a relaxed, open classroom environment conducive to inquiry and participation, and let students know what you will expect from them and what they can expect from you and the course.
Again so true, we need to have there expicite attention so they may be sucsessful in our courses as needed. They can only do this by knowing what is expected and what they must do.
The first day is vitally important in order to set the standards within the institution. All students must understand what is expected from them and this must be consistent with what is seen from all other students in the college.

The syllabus, as you point out, is a great point of discussion for many things. In addition to expectations, it provides an opportunity to bring up support services, etc.
Susan
This is where the syllabus plays a big role. Spelled out in a brief, but informal detail. This is required of you. Yes we have a rule book. Yes we lecture on the importantence of being here, uniforms, rules, cell phones. But when you place it in writing and explain it,it does more for the student than just a lecture.
I think settings expectations can let the students see what will be expected of the and let them plan on how the class enviornment will be. Allowing students introspect to your life shows them you are human too and are there for them. Our experiences have led us to this point in which we feel able to help others iwth their life choices concerning their careers. Adhereing to your expectations shows the students responsibility that they can then rely on and ease them into a better learning enviornment.
