As we get to look back at who was a mentor for us you relize or I did anyway there were more teachers in my life that did some minor little thing not noticed then but now as changing who I am so I try to do the same doing for my students that I have not to be noticed now in there life when it's hopfully in there head for when they need it
Daniel,
This is very true. Most mentors are educators, not neccessarily in the sense of formal education. A mentor shares skills and allows an individual to become for efficacious and successful by learning the skills shared.
Tim,
Sometimes when you can't actually thank your mentors for whatever reason, taking what they have taught you and passing it on is a great thank you.
Anthony,
You made a very important point. Success must be defined by each individual.
Keep in mind that most mentors are educators, but not all educators are mentors.
Nicole,
Have you ever had the chance to thank her? I regret that I have not had the chance to thank my first and most important mentor.
Tim Dosemagen
My first mentor was the woman who got me into the Training Industry to begin with. She brought out in me a talent I didn't realize I had which was teaching. Through her guidance I became a training instructor and then continued to climb to where I am now.
Jim Kinney was the first person to promote me to a position of management, and he also encouraged me to seek my Bachelors degree. He was caring, and without his guidance, I never would have completed college.
I can say that my Dad was a reverse mentor in my lifein what repect. His bi polar illness led to an obervation on how not to treat people. He did however instill in me and my siblings a sense of working hard for what you want to achieve. I have found that in this world that if you work hard and always try to do the right thing you are almost always successful. With that said you need to look inside and define what successful means to you. My motto is always try to be a successful person and when that happens the rest seems to fall in line.
I definitely agree with this. It also gies insight to what the students can expect when they get out into the field of there choice.
John,
Sometimes mentoring is just sharing with the group what you have experienced and the knowledge you have gained from those experiences and assisting others to relate to the information.
I remember my instructor's that have made me push as hard as i can forward to make it in this world. They left me with the courage and knowledge to know that i can do anything that i put my mind to. I know that i have the capability to do my job and be very good at it thru there teachings.
Ronald,
Do you think the mentor "gives" us the confidence or they give us the opportunities to build the confidence?
Jay,
How did each of these individuals play a part as being your mentor? Was it simply by understanding your goals and standing beside you?
James,
This is a great example. Your mentor created a connection with you by simply asking about you and your life. This connection is very important in the career college sector to increase retention.
I had a teacher at a community college who was late or wanted to leave early or one time didn t show up at all I try to be the opposite of him
Luckily I’ve had several mentors in my career. The common things I learned are to work hard, be honest and be kind. I also learned what NOT to do when I worked at a failing business. Sometimes you learn things in an unexpected way.
I agree we all have the power to change our lives. But without the confidence that the mentor gives us sometimes we don't realize it until alot later in life. The reason I turned to education was so I could give back some of my own experiences to help others realize there passions.
I had a teacher in high school that took the time and impacted my life by realizing that as individuals we all go down different paths, for me it was the fascination with automobiles, my father also played a very important role and made me aware that you need to work hard and be responsible.
Albert,
Sometimes we can't see that we are being mentored to, until later. Glad you had a great experience.
