Leadership

Little things like leadership roles in the class are amazing retention tools. At times even if you have established your leadership roles you can seek out the troubled students and give them some type of role to aid in motivation. I feel the teamwork and leadership roles = outstanding retention.

I agree, Leadership is confidence,I tell students, try not to follow everybody in everything they do, but show that you can perform on your own.

Thomas,

Thanks for sharing this. What are some specific activities you facilitate to help students practice leadership?

Jeffrey Schillinger

I agree with having students understand the team dynamic. Learning how to manage a team and utilize your teammates to the best potential helps students learn how to become successful leaders in the future.

I like my students to work in teams. By allowing people to become responsible for a team, it builds confidence, it also gives them an opportunity to help a weaker link.

When students are challenged to assume a leadership role I believe it enhances their ability to follow. Once they experience how difficult it can be to keep the team motivated and on task I use their experience to encourage them to become more empathetic and cooperative. Once the roles are reversed and they resume a subordinate role the desired outcome is a teammate which will support the Leader and the task no matter who is in charge. .

While enhancing a students natural leadership abilities it is always important to rotate duties, giving the underacheiving student the opportunity to handle responsiblities. On a rotating basis, this gives the new student something to reach for, knowing that their chance is just around the corner.

Kyle,

Great idea. I agree that students who feel as part of a team or leader will be in class more.
