Retention Everyday

It is important to let the students know that you care about them, but also assure them that they need to be accountable. Yes, you do have to keep the relationship on a professional level at all times.

Amy,

One way might be to greet students as they enter, being mindful of their appearance. Reminding students why they are in school and why the rules exist can also helpful. It may also help to remind them why the rules exist.

I understand the need for rules. I am a new instructor and new to the classroom. I have to say that it has been hard for me to learn to look for all the people breaking rules. I am getting better but it's like you need eyes in the back of your head. I guess with any job there are learning curves but I have a hard time looking for jewelry, tattoos, sneakers, and color of shirts under uniforms. I am more concerned with getting them the information they need but I see why it's important for me to make them follow the rules. Any suggestions on how to monitor my students better?

i agree. Caring about the students is the key compnent for students to succeed. Students may not have the structure and need encourgement

Catherine,

Good point. Everyone needs to treat school policies like they their own policies. If someone does not agree with a school policy, or thinks it is incorrect, the person needs to follow it while working through the oproper channels to get it changed.

My experience is that students who understand how a policy benefits them rarely violate the policy.

You hit a nail on the head here. Students seem determined to see just how far they can go over established boundaries/rules. It is paramount to remember to maintain a friendly professional demeanor and stand firm on rules. It would be best if all instructors were monitoring adherence to rules. It makes it hard when some do and some don't.

Lori,

Sometimes students lose sight of the goal while they are working toward it. When that happens, students can make bad decisions and try to get away with things that they should not try to get away with.

Thats it. I do care about my student and I believe in letting them know that and that they can have a great career ahead of them. But the great career will only come if I hold them accountable know. The students seem to want to see how much they can get away with and this takes away from the learning/retention time in class.
