GOALS REQUIRE FOCUS
After looking at the overall goal of student retention, I believe goal is the key word. If in the recruitment / enrollment process the importance of goals and achieving your goals was made clear to the student they would focus more on their goal of being successful and therefore, not finishing their program would not even be an option.
Good point John. the bottom line is that if a student does not stay engaged then they will wonder. To stay engaged, the burden lies on the shoulders of the school as well as the student. Giving a student a "free pass" and not challenging them, they become complacent. THis will lead the student to look for alternatives to keep them busy or interested. These "side jobs" usually lead to disconnect from the program.
Sounds like you are doing the right things. Keep doing and then some.

Agreed,
Also I think that during the recruitment/ enrollment process, A tour of the facility helps allot and when I see that a recruiter is giving a tour I ALWAYS Invite them in the class room, as most usually have safety glasses with them for that purpose. I also try to spend as much time as i can with them and the potential student-- I have always gotten great feedback from the recruiter or person doing the tour. Some have even said that -that was what sealed the deal so to speak. Good feelings all around with this Goal orientated approach.
