Retention

Getting to know each of your students, watching their attitude and behaviors, and demonstrating a true caring for their success will help keep students in school.

Sure does. Do your best to incorporate.

That is something that helps the student feel the real value in thier education.

If you want to improve retention, hire faculty and staff with excellent people skills. Social skills make a huge difference.

Dr. B

I have not heard this saying, but I will remember it. I agree, there have been many Instructors who are very knowledge based but their people skills are low. Students turn the instructor off when they feel that the instructor doesn't care. It is imperative that students feel that the instructor really has a real desire for the student to succeed.

It is important to know your students, their problems, their successes, and their needs. If you personalize the education experience, it is easier to keep students involved and you can retain them. You need to make the goal of graduation real and create an attitude where students strive for success.

I have to say that setting the stage on the first day definitely is a must to set the way student will approach your class. It also help to set your goals ad expectations at a higher level than students might expect, this keeps them involved in the class and expecting something new every day.

I agree with you that we can improve retention, if we are responding to the needs of students and watching for their attitude changes or change in their academic profile. We have an open door policy for our students, we offer frequently for the student to come and talk with us if they need anything at all. We encourage mandatory tutoring for any student that does not receive a B grade or better on any test or quiz.

Tardiness, absenteeism, not paying attention or failing to retain information, mind appears to be elsewhere (not focused). If I do observe any of these behaviors, I immediately take steps with the student to correct them to ensure their success.

Nice... the key is to form a strong relationship and a relationship equates to trust.

I really enjoy getting to know students. I try to listen to their music, watch their movies and peruse their shows once in a while so that I can better relate to them. I think that this is essential to retention. We need to know our students.

You are so right! Getting to know your students really does help keeping the student in school. They feel as though someone really does care about their success.

Hello Donald and Peers,

I am convinced that reaching out to others with authenticity and generosity is best practice. I know that when I do so, the responsiveness of my colleagues, peers, team-mates, and students produces winning outcomes. I make it a point to know all my students by name within the first week of class. I greet them routinely throughout campus and find that they are quite pleased to experience being acknowledged. Genuine care for the student is felt by them on many different communicative frequencies.

An excellent point. No matter what the age of the student they want to know they matter and their education matters. School is a very enjoyable experience but it can also be a very stressful experience. Nothing is better to help relieve stress then to know that your instructor cares and will do all they can do to help you to be successful. When a student has that kind of support they will not want to leave because they have a strong belief that they can do anything they set their mind to because they are not alone.

I agree that when you show students you truly care about them they really open up to you

Yes, you should make your classes fun and engaging. A set of rules always helps to set the stage for expectations. Nothing wrong with that.

Dr. B

In some cases giving a set of rules is a big help for some students even they are welcoming it so that thier class studies are not interrupted by other students that just want to make jokes and be the class clown. It show that you do care about thier learning and is a big help, it does not mean that you cann't have fun as well but you have to set the line on what it is and how far this can go.I have seen some students become more involved this way and it open a line between the instructor and the students.

Not wrong. The key is to form a relationship. And a relationship equates to trust. So, do what you can to develop a trusting relationship with your students.

Dr. B

Calling students by there first name is a good idea, but our students refer to us by MR. so I call them by MR or Miss trying to show them the same respect as they show me ,I might be wrong in doing so.

Awesome. Mentoring really pays by improving retention. Another word is advising on career themes.
