Job placement
If I have a student who is not sure of there job prospects thay tend to add classes to stay in school longer.
I also that happening as well. What I do is I will bring in adds. Or talk about current job openings in the field and encourage them to apply.
Thomas,
Success stories really help students to connect what they are learning to the workplace. Good for you.
Dr. Larry Banks
I do the same alway tell success stories so the student can see its real and out there for them.we also placestudents in our field that will better utilize thier skills and not just go through the motions therefor they are always learning the skills to success.
I like the fact that our school regularly updates the success stories of graduates in framed picture boxes in the hallways. I am always looking them over and encouraging my students to do the same. I believe it gives them the mentality that, "If so and so an achieve this type of success, then so can I!".
Yes, this happens. Many students are afraid to step into employment. Do all you can to make them feel comfortable.

David,
I think the student is scared to leave school. The are so comfortable with the enviroment and scared to look for a job and leave the comfort zone. My advice is weekly advising meetings, taking the student to networking events, job fairs, ect. Have the student job shadow and find out the world is not so scary after all :)
I do the same but i also tell them about bad experience. Some you learn from the bad experience.
Education opens the door. Then, the student gets the job with his or her personality and ability to connect.
Dr. B
I try to explain to the student it is up to them to sell themselves. They need to get their feet in the door and then prove themselves. Just because it’s a tough job market does not mean they can’t get a job.
I worked in my field for 29 years before teaching the subject. I continually discuss real life situations. Students are always interested in what the work area will be like. I also keep current with local demands for employees in the field. Being able to address real opportunities in the field encourages successful completion of the student's learning experience.
I welcome information from students and former students that help me show the success other have found with this career path also.
I can tell stories all day long, but I can also make them up all day long I have graduates come in and tell stories about their successes
Good. This is the best kind of evidence and graduates telling the story is a key to improving retention.
Dr. B
Live examples speak for themselves.i have graduates come in and tell stories about their successes
I think having qualified staff members visit externship sites would be a good idea. This way, staff/instructors have first hand experience with industry professionals and can return to the school/classroom with current knowledge. Students also like to see that there is still a connection with the school even though they are on externship/going out on externship.
We encourage students to go out and shadow a professional person for a day. This exercise opens up a whole new world to the student. This exercise has also opened doors for student employment. A written report on the experience is also a requirement, along with a business card of the person they interviewed. We encourage students to send a thank you letter.
Always share success stories. Especially as it pertains to overcoming obstacles.
Dr. B
I do the same and also remind them of their current locations and how they also faced the same challanges, but were able to overcome.
Sometimes this helps. It gives the prospective employer a chance to see the person in action. Are there other ways?
