We have student mentors as part of our staff. This is a big help.
I also agree that mentoring is a big retention tool for students. A lot of it is just buidling the confidence in the student that they can do it and that we are here for them but some of them need to be reminded of it! Checking in on the students occasionally makes the student aware that we due truly care about their outcome.
I think having an understanding of the career or job the student is training for is also a way to motivate students to complete.
Yes I think mentoring is essential to maintaining students and keeping retention high. There is success in building relationships with students to encourage them be successful in school.

It is beneficial to establish the goals for the sutdent. If the student is working toward a particular goal the more likely they are to complete their academic program. Also, a mentoring program can be used as a retention tool in assisting students reach their goals after college.
The students start school with at least a rough set of goals already in place. Throughout the learning process, those goals should be refined, reinforced and supported by the school and instructors. Having the student's rough idea become a crystal clear plan can motivate and empower the student to work even harder to be successful.
Often times retention efforts can benefit the school such as increased enrollment, improved student and staff satisfaction, and placement efforts.
