Jeffrey,

I talk to students at the beginning of their program about the HABE's and the impact that having the right attitude can have on their success. I provide examples of students who've gone through very difficult challenges, and how their attitude allowed them to persist and persevere. I try to adopt the idea behind Home Depot's marketing scheme: "You can do it. We can help."

Richard,

What are some things that you do to encourage the development of this attitude in your students?

Jeffrey Schillinger

I have noted that our more successful students have developed some positive habits. Reading before class, arriving in class on time and prepared, completing class assignments, seeking clarification from the instructor on content not understood.

Successful students do not allow adversity to prevent them from graduating. They figure out ways to deal with the different challenge that come up, be they academic, life issues, or financial matters.

I inspire other students to adapt by sharing with them experiences of other students who have used these techniques and been successful in their college studies, and therefore, it has prepared them for a successful career. I continue by sharing with them how these techniques can serve them as well. I help the students picture in their minds, how their success stories will look (WIFM).

I agree with you on praising the students. I have always found the strength a individual has and work on that aspect of a person to influence the HABE of a individual

Diana,

Thanks. How do you inspire other students to adapt these behaviors?

Jeffrey Schillinger

My successful students attend class regularly, and always have their homework and projects completed before the due date. My successful students also start working immediately on their projects, which allow them plenty of time to be prepared.

Hello Jeff,

It really depends on the student. I offer all of my students the same option of being tutored. I make myself available and explain to them the benefits of being tutored and how it will help them to succeed in the class.

Thank you for asking,

Diana

Catherine,

What are some of the specific behaviors that show students are accepting person responsibility?

Jeffrey Schillinger

In very general terms, a student who accepts personal responsibility will succeed.

HABE's kind of spell out what i see every student needs to be. and we work on that starting day one.

Richard,

We used to call what you described "catching students doing something correctly." It is a simple but powerful technique.

Jeffrey Schillinger

I have found praising the students on a job well done does wonders. And the ones who didn't do as well I look for something to make positive commits about. You can always find a way to encourage and motivate them without being negative.

Thanks, Timothy. What do you do specifically to help your students who do not have these HABEs to develop them?

Jeffrey Schillinger

I have some students that have a great attitute no matter what they have to do. They know that you cannot give everything, they know that they have responsibilities. They are respectful and accept criticism and they are open to your suggestions.

They are in class everyday, practice positive thinking and behaviors, they are interested in learning and do study. Sometimes a student that is not successful has their mind focused on other things in their life and not their education.

Some of the habits, attitudes and beliefs that i have seen in my most successful students are; I won't give up. I want to know more. These two attitudes have taken alot of studnet to the end of the road to say. With these student I find that they study, read a head and ask lots of question. the less successful students are all ways coming up with reason why the could not get things done.

seems like the best ones stay focusded on the task at hand, and ask alot of questions
