Goals

The first or second of class, I have the students write down their short and long term goals. Than we stick them to the inside of their textbooks. I want the students to see these goals every time they open their books. This will give them the incentive to continue.

Great idea! I like the fact that this will reinforce what the goal is for the student, every time they open their book they are reminded of what they are working towards.

I find that it helps a lot, if on the first day of class you asked each students what are their expectations from the course. I then explain that these expectations are actually goals , and all goals are attainable if you consistently remined yourself that you are here to achieve those goals.

I believe that goals are the driving force for my students. They do have to be specific goals, and I monitor their progress, although they are only with us for 3 week rotations.

Shirley, I do something similar by having students write down short term goals and long term goals. I suggest they post these goals around their home so they are visible. Place the list inside of their textbooks is a good idea. Thanks for sharing.

I agree with having the students list their goal as they enter school within the 1st week. We discuss their goals and some obstacles that might stand in their ways to acheive their golas so that we can identify them and come up with some ideas as a class to overcome them

after they have completed their 3rd class, i sit with each student and see where they are with the goals they wrote down the 1st week of school - are theuy on track? what do we have to do to get back on track? do they have the same goals? if not why not?

I inform students that a "goal" is something that is obtainable, you can achieve, you can accomplish. Such as, they want to pass this course, they want to graduate from school. I also, tell them to start out w/small goals and work your way up to bigger ones.

I whole heartily agree... Inaddition,to effectively set goals, students must have goals that are specific. They cannot just say they want to be successful some day. Success could mean a lot of things depending on the person. So, they have to specify what they really want to achieve.
