Consistency!
Consistency changes attitudes, which changes lives! Each day I meet and greet my students with a smile and a cheery hello or comment! Even the saddest sad-sack can’t help but smile and, whether they realize it or not, adjust their attitude in a positive direction. A positive attitude makes the entire class and day more beneficial for everyone!
Terrail,
You are correct. As the professionals, we must maintain our tempers and focus on the issues and the solutions.
Jeffrey Schillinger
Students always respond to fairness and consistency. Even when delivering bad news if you are consistent it works well. I believe in style, tone, and manner. You can say anything or approach anyone if doing so with the right style, tone, and manner for the situation.
I like that...the saddest sad sack...very cute
I agree, generally being happy will show the students that even through adversity there is a silver lining. There is a line that one should not cross though; being too silly or comcal can take away the seriousness of the learning objectives. I have seem too many times when instructors feel that games and jokes are the path to a proper educational experience, when in fact it is not.
The Dale Carnegie Course teaches:
Don't complain and criticize.
Give positive feedback.
See things from the student's point of view.
Smile.
Be a good listener.
Ask questions.
Talk about things the student is interested in.
Be geuninely interested in other people.
Make the thing you want them to do seem easy.
All these things work well!
Thanks, Greg.
I do not think there is a way to overstate how important making the school experience "fun" is to the level of success in the school. Students who do not have fun on campus do not stay on campus very long.
Some folks believe fun and hard work are mutually exclusive. How would you respond to that?
Smile , smile ,smile if you give the happy persauna the class will follow it. Even the worst student attitude can be turned into some good fun.
Smile, smile, and smile some more it's contaguous. A good positive start on the day will bring great results in the atmosphere of the class room.
Thanks, John.
It is interesting how well some of the simpliest ideas work. Keep on smiling.
