I talk about all the different jobs I have and all of the different types of work in our field.
Good post, Guy,
Students usually benefit from seeing the successes of similar others. It helps them to internalize that success is possible.

I use other instructors success stories to give students an insight to what is possible for the students futures. More importantly I use graduated students successes to help current students gain confidence in themselves.
I stress the need for all of my students to maintain their integrity. In today's society, it is easy for some students to be swayed by any number of outside pressures.
I give them examples of people who are successful and have the highest ethical standards and I also explain how greed and a lack of ethics and morality have contributed to many of todays' problems in business.
The bottom line is live your life by always reaching and exceeding your goals. The true measure of success is reaching your goals without having regrets about how you reached them.

Tracey,
Switching seats is a simple, but effective technique. Thanks for sharing this.

My students need constant feedback and praise. I always try to have a positive attitude and model how I want them to behave. On tests, I write positive comments about how well they've done or to come and see me for exra help if they haven't done so well.
I make them switch seats every day in some of my classes so they get to know each person and build a bigger support network.
I try to inspire them to use their gifts. The students have a lot to bring to the table. More that we instructors really know. They have life experience that can be attributes to their class room activities. They can be leaders and teachers within their student community.
I also tell them to encourage themselves. I tell the to say to themselves " I am smart, I will succeed and I am the best!" They have to believe in themselves even if no one else will.
i remind them that are here to learn , not to just get a grade. we have 10 question test and I remind them that they should know 100 thing not just 10
Bruce,
What are some of the intentional things you do to support each other?
We all support eachother we have a system in place to help the students if they are in need and we have a good staff that is willing to go the extra mile to get the things done in a fast effective manner.
I like to talk about my successes in the very same field that they are studying in. This gives the whole class, including me a sense of worth.
Encouraging faculty to be the best they can be on a daily basis, I call this a "Day Maker".
I ask them to find their own solutions to problems exist, because if they become solution-oriented they will most likely stay on task.
Admittedly, I have never stopped to consider how I could inspire my co-workers, but that's a great goal to begin pursuing.
With students, I spend a lot of time encouraging the individuals enrolled in my courses. Some students have no support system at home. In some cases, family and friends are not only unsupportive and disregard the importance of the academic pursuit but students also encounter friends and family that openly discourage or criticize their efforts to do something better for themselves.
I genuinely believe that any person can succeed with enough effort and focus. Beyond encouraging my students to continue making the effort and remaining positive in my feedback and outlook, I also openly share the struggles I faced pursuing my degrees and "prove" that obstacles can be overcome. If they can relate to your challenges, then they can also relate to your success.
I try to be supportive and listen.
Thanks, Kimberly. I am glad the quotes work for you.
The classes I teach in my students words... "I am never going to do this"... "This is boring"
"This makes my head hurt".... I teach Medical Coding. I am a CPC... I try to inspire my students and encourage them even at the smallest feat. I tell them I have faith in them, they are smart, and they can do anything they set their minds too. On my daily agenda, I put inspirational quotes... one of my favorites... "trophy's arent given at the beginning of a race"... and another one..." have something to bring to the table... it will make you more welcome."
I hear every negative statements that my students say. I always come back with a positve to try to retrain there thinking patterns about themselves
Everyday start class with an inspirational thought and helping students an co-workers set attainable goals
Being supportive, giving encouragement, & being a mentor!
