Naomi,

Painting yourself as a "similar other" who has been where the students are now and can show them they way to get where they want to be is an effective way to build rapport.

Jeffrey Schillinger

I would tell my students some of my personal experience out in my field of practice. For example how a patient progressed over multiple treatments to achieve a final goal. After hearing about my experiences this usually motivates the students into working harder towards their goal of finishing the program and working with patients.

Magdalena,

Great strategy. Thanks for sharing it.

Jeffrey Schillinger

I give anonymous success stories to my students to show them that they are more than capable of accomplishing their goals. When they get discouraged or when I can see that they are starting to lose momentum, I turn the class room around, and change things up a bit to keep them engaged and motivated!

You are right on target here, Melvin. I ued to avoid the teachers' lounge at a few of the high schools for which I taught.

My experience is that a negative person tries to bring others down to their level of misery creating more negativity. Associating with positive minded people will get you where you want to go.

I think it's important for students to be able to "see" their progress. Seeing that progress is a great motivator! I have students self evaluate themselves at the beginning of a clinical rotation on several skills, then have them re-evaluate themselves on the same skills toward the end of the rotation. It helps them visualize how much they have learned and to focus their remaining clnical time on other skills that still need practice.

Encouragement and support to co-workers or students can inspire greater self-efficacy. Valuing their viewpoints and opinions provide for self-awereness and inspiration to realize that they can make a difference.

I try to point out their great attitudes & conscientiousness. Their positive attitute will affect those around them and I tell them that they are going to be the impetus for changing the atmosphere of care in the operating room.

I remind them of how much they have learned already and how they though they couldn't last term.

Carol,

What are the sytematic ways your college deterimenes and addresses common student needs?

Jeffrey Schillinger

Our school's focus in many ways on how we can do a better job with our students How we can build a team effort toward the success of the student. We have shown a great success by our actions as faculty and employees. We care for our students and want to share the best of the best among them.
Being aware of student needs, offering more help along the way is all very important for the success and the ultimate goal for the student is usually getting a job of their dreams. Reaching their goals with the help of everyone that the student meets at the school that they attend

I am always challenging myself either mentally or physically

I reassure them with what they do correct immediately. I find this empowers them.

What I have been doing is to always keep a positive attitude in front of the students.A lot of my students come to me and complain about just anything what I do is that I give them a positive answers and that changes their attitude towards the day.Just by offering yourself to the students can bring about change in their attitude.

Paula,

What are some of the instructional strategies you believe are effective that some of your peers may be unwilling to adopt?

Jeffrey Schillinger

I so agree with you regarding tunnel vision. I find some instructors are so set in their ways when it comes to teaching that they don't want to learn new things. Students change and instructors need to change and learn new things also.

Nicole,

Positioning oneself as a "similar other" by sharing that we have been where the students are now and that the students can get to the places we did provides an excellent opportunity to build rapport and credibility.

Jeffrey Schillinger

Encouragement, show motivation, willingness to listen and elaborate on the concerns of your students and co workers. I like to give examples of where I started and how I got to where I am . I think if others can benefit, it will show that with hard work and the right motivation anything can be accomplished.

I am supportive and enthusiastic towards my students. When they approach me with issues they are having I show empathy and help them to focus on the positives and ways they can overcome the issue that they are facing.
