care about your job because it helps others
if you don't like your job quit
I always told my staff that life is too short to be unhappy. We are typically at our jobs more than at home and we see our co-workers more than our own families. We need to be happy together and communication is the key. Things can usually be done better and I respect the one's doing it day to day. They know it better than anyone. We just need to learn to listen.
Sandra,
You are correct regarding accountability. It is important that someone take ownership of teacher development at each campus.
We require our Deans to be in a new faculty member's classroom during the first three weeks the new teacher is on staff. We then follow up this observation with at least one more every quarter the first year. Faculty observations and attendance rates help us to recognize where we may need to spend more time.
Teachers can be be taught too.
Teaching is a process that constantly evolves. Some teachers just need some nudging.
If your institution truly has an instructor that shouldn't be there I think some accountability is in order from Dept. Chairs or HR etc. Are evaluations regularly performed and reviewed?
Sometimes opening up their eyes to the options of your industry, can put a shot in the arm to some of these students.
You are absolutely correct, Brian.
Unfortunately, many negative people do not see this and/or are too afraid of making a change to seek other employment.
I don't care who you are if you don't like your job and the people you work with and for it shows in your day to day work.
If we can take the time to understand the functional responsibilities of each staff member, we can realize that sometimes the blame sits behind our desk or stands in front of the classroom.
You need to enjoy your job When asked by the students, what is my advice I always say " Life is not about what you can do, But Who you can help along the way
This is a great way to describe our impact on our students and their impact upon us. Thank you, Kristina.
I care about my job because I get to be apart of peoples dreams. I tell my class that when the leave my class that apart of me goes with them and that I am so touch to be apart of their suceess or failure. I also tell them that each one has touched my life for the better and I appreciate them for who the are. I realized a long time ago, the my life is not about me, it is how can I be of service to others.
Robert,
Unfortunately, a lot of people are scared to quit, especially in poor economic times. How can those of us that should be teachers encourage those that should not be to leave for the good of the students?
