Notice the student.

talk with the student when you have the opportunity. Call them by name. Ask the student how they are doing. Even call the student Mr. or Ms. and their first name. Respect to the students goes further than, negative communication. Never turn your back on the student or walk away whenthey are speaking. Face-to-face communication is the best way to get their attention and obtain their respect for you.

I always try to do the same. The only problem is when I get students it is for a 3 week period and there are sometimes up to 30 new students at a time. I just try harder to make this happen.

1. Name tags! Either fold 5x7 cards into "tents" and use those, or go to Office Max and buy the pin-on kind. I've been doing this for 11 years, and other teachers constantly remark about what a good idea it is. But no one but me has ever done it.

2. Get to class early. This is one great opportunity to talk personally to the first, or the first few, students who arrive. Ask them how they're liking your course so far. Compliment them on getting there early. Tell them that is a very positive trait. Ask them how their weekend was. Ask them how their health is. Ask them how much sleep they get. Ask them if they have an area set up at home for doing homework.

Thanks, Rhonda.

What are some specific things a teacher can do to show respect for the student?

I think the big key aspect is RESPECT FOR THE STUDENT!!

Thanks, Scott.

What are some specific things you do to show your students that you respect them?

What are some specific ways your students indicate that they respect themselves?

Yes this is about respect if we respect them then they will also respect us and pretty soon they will start to respect themselves as well isnt that the ultimate goal!

I try to learn every students name, not just the ones who sit in my office because they have done smething wrong. I feel I owe it to every student to learn their names - RESPECT

I always work to learn each student's name during the first session of class. I'm am surprised at how many faculty members do not know the names of their students late in the term. I am also surprised at the number of students who have no idea what the name of their instructor is late in the term! I'm fortunate that I'm a full time instructor/director and have more contact with students throughout the day than do our adjuncts. However, a little bit of familiarity can go along way to facilitate feelings of success.
