Team

It is very easy for one negative person to tear the team apart. How can you encourage positivity to someone that is so negative and not interested in anything? Even after surrounding that person with positive people.

This can be such a big challenge. In a room full of managers, there are typically several who have been there and are not wanting to be there any longer. They are closed to any positive or change talk. Getting their buy in is important to the team. I try to lead by example, encourage their feedback and remind them they have a voice however, it would be more appreciated if it were a constructive voice versus destructive. Dividing into small groups can help foster more discussion. But, the challenge is what to do in the face of heels dug in resistance.

we should all work together and look over the negativity and work together as a team.

There are tools to handle those negative individuals:

1. Instead of disagreeing with that person, find some truth in what they are saying so they can see that you are observing the world in which they live. You can verbally disarm someone by agreeing with them. Once you've verbally disarmed them, you can interject your opinion in a non-polarizing manner and usually they will understand your point of view. This method works like magic.

2. Negative people are caught in a mental negative feedback loop and don't know how to get off the treadmill of negativity. Teaching them cognitive behaviorally therapy is an effective way to overcome their tendency to automatically think negatively.
