You're right that even with the instructor doing all their best in terms of readiness, there seems like there are some that just don't seem to be able to get with the program. I think, in part, therein lies both the problem and a possible solution. Disinterested, why? Distracted, why? Confused or lost, why? In other words, each observable factor requires a discussion to first learn what might be going on in the backside of their life, determine if they understand the expectations (sometimes students are not aware they are lacking), and provide guidance towards improvement. Part of our job is being willing to spend the time needed to focus on these challenges.
