My instructional style is very professional, yet welcoming to the students. I teach Digital Media and General Education courses, and I always dress Business Professional in the classroom. My classes and break times begin and end on time, and students are deducted points if they are late coming back from break. My classroom instructional methods are well organized. Students are advised of classroom expectations and disciplinary actions in the classroom.
Although classroom expectations are somewhat strict, I am inviting to the students. I always welcome them with a smile and an upbeat attitude. I teach a Speech class where students are required to give 4 public speeches in front of the class. This is frightening to many students. However, I encourage them, and grade them based on their strengths.
I also encourage students to talk to me about issues that are affecting their attendance, for example transportation, child care, etc. If they know they are going to be running late or leaving early, let me know in advance so I can advise them of the homework. Therefore, the student does not just leave in the middle of the class and miss pertinent information.
