Challenges

As educator one of the challenges that we deal everyday is on how to engage the students and stay focus on their study, lecture-discussions or even achieve higher scores. It is imperative to recognize and understand the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that may interfere with their studies. After identifation of the problem, educators needs to focus on the resolution of the proble. Some of the important way to keep the students attention is by teaching with confidence and competence and staying current to the issues, research concerning the class and current events to update our students too and for them… >>>

Enhancing Student Retention

It is my desire to demonstrate a full effectiveness in my role as an instructor. I intend to utilize the new information that has been presented to me in the learning module to enhance my classroom interaction with the students.

Action plan: Will survey by questionnaire to check computer skills they already possess. Ask them if they feel they can do a function entirely without assistance, require some cueing or total assist.

Students achieve self-confidence by not only mastering the material, by becoming more responsible for their learning.

Any collaborative projects that have been facilitated, is great appreciated when the instructor also participates based on experience over material being mastered.

Students enjoy applying information to clinical experiences and doing hands on with purpose and direction from the instructor.

As a result they grow professionally and continue to develop their expertise--they take responsibility for further learning--some have even researched info for purposes of evaluation.

Reviewing for a quiz

I think that reveiwing for a quiz or test is a good idea when everyone is doing the same thing.  I'm going to check into our department and see what others are doing.

ACTION

I found that making sure the students are encouraged to succeed and valued as a program participant really helps them finish the program.

Student engagement in lecture.

I have noticed that asking my students lots of questions during the course of a class is a great way to get the students involved in the class. I try to use a variety of questions from really easy to really difficulty. If the students are not able ot answer the really difficulty questions I try to break it down into a series of easier questions. These questions once they work through enable to student to answer the hard question.

Student Retention

Encouragement, acknowledgement and creating an environment conducive to learning is my best practice.

Good suggestions

Interesting - but triky to have group activities with mixed adult and younger students.

Student Retention

I've found that egagement in class offers the higest rate of student retention in adult students. Its a delicate balance of alowing students to express themselves through discussion with thier peers, and acheiving minor goals like meeting deadlines, explaining using the whiteboard, presenting a new idea or question related to a topic of interest. The only challenge for the instructor is to keep the class on course and not drift too far away from the topic.

The traditional student is being replaced by the non-traditional student! And we as instructors need to be aware of this paradigm shift in education!

This was a very good introduction into the role of the instructor as classroom facilitator at ECPI.  As a career college, our goal is to give our students the foundation knowledge and then through skill development, reinforce the relevancy of this knowledge by making the connection between the classroom and the clinic.  This learning module did a succinct job of encompassing this style of learning and making sure we are "student-centric" when teaching and placing the greatest emphasis on retention and demonstration of knowledge not merely GPA.

Letting students having some say in the class usually motivates them because they are feel like they are part of the learning in class.
