The Roles of the Faculty Coach

I often have the honor and pleasure to talk with Faculty Coaches about different aspects of the CEE Faculty Development Program and, of course, each Faculty Coach plays an important part in the success of the program’s on-campus  or online implementation. I am occasionally asked about the different roles of the Faculty Coach as the CEE program is introduced and maintained, and as instructors go through their faculty development journey, so I wanted to take the opportunity to mention what some of those roles might be. I included the information below in my series of Coaching Corner weekly newsletter emails, but I wanted to include it in our Faculty Coach Consortium group as well.

Here are a few specific areas where Faculty Coaches champion the program:

·         Introduce the program, utilizing resources from the CEE, and ensure that their instructors are registered on the CEE site

·         Assist instructors with preliminary activities such as completing the Baseline Assessment and beginning the Individual Development Plan

·         Help instructors, along with the Baseline Assessment’s collaborative recommendations and the program’s Competency Maps, to select online training courses

·         Encourage faculty to engage in their courses, take their time, and participate in course discussion forums, as well as post-course activities such as the Performance Forum and The Lounge

·         Hold onsite discussion meetings or in-services (utilizing CEE resources/facilitation documents), given academic calendars and busy schedules, where instructors can discuss applications from the courses they have completed

·         Conduct training observations, or set up learning partnerships where instructors can informally observe each other while applying specific applications that they wish to demonstrate from the courses they have completed – The CEE provides observation instruments for the core courses in the program and they are available on each Faculty Coach’s “My Site”

·         Monitor instructor progress by using the reporting features of the program including “My Stats” and “My Reports”

True, there are many roles asked of the Faculty Coach, and to help, there are many resources in the CEE program to ease the implementation process, reduce workload, and support the Faculty Coach along the way. Of course, please feel free to contact me at any time for questions about any of the CEE program’s components and resources, and as always, thanks so much for being a CEE champion! The CEE Faculty Development Program would not be effective without each of you!!
