The Sailor

Yesterday in The Lounge I had the opportunity to present an educational quote from John Ralston that perhaps speaks a lot about career education:
"Ten geographers who think the world is flat will tend to reinforce each other's errors….Only a sailor can set them straight."

Please know that I am not at all criticizing geographers or minimizing the importance or major contributions of that discipline, but the quote got me thinking about the hands-on practicality of what we teach in our career colleges and universities. We, in fact, have the honor of training sailors who, in turn, will have the chance to be on the "front line," so to speak to practice their skills and share their experiences.

Our instructors bring so much experience and realism to the subjects they teach based on their years in the discipline, subject matter, skill or trade. This hopefully excites all of us that are part of the faculty development process as we have the opportunity to help professional practitioners, who are subject-matter experts, enhance their instructional delivery and teaching acumen.
