Government certification tests ????

I just finished ED104, and found it informative. However, on a completely different subject, my students took their EPA certification test yesterday. This morning was a terrible let-down, when I saw the results. I have the standard study packet, video, and sample questions. I covered all the material daily for five days prior to the test. Still the results were horrible. I tell all my students, we teach the information they will need to figure out any problem they may encounter in the field. It's all a matter of applying what they know to the situation at hand. With these certification tests that doesn't work. It's so frustrating, to have to teach them to memorize dates from 15 to 20 years ago. And worse yet, how to be good test answer- guessers.

This is a quandary.  More and more we learn that paper and pen tests are not the best assessment tools.  Yet, we are weighed down by an educational and industry certification process that counts on these so much.  Yo don't want to teach to the test and yet you want the students to succeed.  Not sure if I have a solution to your problem but I did want to confirm that I think this is more of a shared issue then you might know.
