Managing New Instructors

When bringing on new instructors, it is important that each manager does an orientation of the position to review over the expectations of instructing students.

 

If I have hired a new instructor it is because I see great potential in this persons ability to teach students what they need to know to be successful in their career, It is mandatory that new instructors attend an orientation with senior management and myself, the program director, before ever setting foot into the classroom to teach. We start with classroom management and cover grading, campus  portals, student advisings etc.....this process can take up to 30-days and on-going training thereafter.   

Yes, new instructors need a lot of support at first; but if trained well they will be excellent.

New instructors generally lack experience and class management skills even though they may be content experts.  New instructors should be required to shadow an experienced instructor the first time teaching.  The new instructor will be able to get pointers on effective class management techniques that can be applied when the new instructor steps out on his/her own. 

I so agree. If the new instructor is just thrown into the programm without proper training or orientation, it does not benefit the student at all, and will put uneeded stress on the instructor and entire team.

 I would think after an offer has been made and accepted, that would be one of the first steps taken, and more specifically, it should be done at the Director level, not Manager.
