5 Benefits of Service Learning Programs

Service learning programs represent a unique learning model with benefits for multiple constituents including the students who participate in such programs, the recipients of the service efforts, and the hosting community.  What are some of the benefits of service learning programs that can be realized?

5 Benefits of Service Learning Programs

  1. Expands community relationships - Just like any organization; schools operate within a business ecosystem in which an institution is supported by a foundation of interdependent organizations and individuals.  Service learning programs require that schools develop relationships with their fellow community partners to produce mutually beneficial outcomes.  Through service learning programs, the school can become a more active and more significant part of the ecosystem in which it operates.
  2. Transfer knowledge and skills from the classroom to the community – Service learning programs engage students in real and positive ways and allows students to “practice” their skills under supervision while expanding their expertise and enhancing their resumes.
  3. Promotes teamwork and civic duty - Collaboration provides experience in the challenges of working with individuals and groups that come from diverse settings.  Additionally, service learning promotes the concept of civic duty and active involvement in one’s community to help others.
  4. Service learning programs generate emotional consequences - Students are invested in the program and are being “counted on” by the community partner who has a real-world stake in the outcome.  This creates emotional consequences which can enhance commitment to the learning activity.
  5. Involves students in problem solving in the specific context of the service activity and the community - Service learning programs enable students to addresses complex problems in real-world settings rather than in isolation in controlled academic settings.  The real world application of skills helps provide practical experience invaluable to a students’ career preparation.
