Body language of an instructor

I believe that body language of an instructor plays big role in delivering lecture. A positive body language conveys the student that the instructor is well prepared and is concerned with students learning.

To tactile or not to tactile

Tactile learning for my students is the best way to intake mass amounts of information and skill sets. Unfortunately we don't have time to introduce all materials that way, so I try to meet them in the middle with multimedia examples.

A thorough explanation of your expections = less irrelevant questions

Being an expertise of subject instructor who works with students being predominantly young males I get the alpha personas that question authority. That's fine unless it's to take control of my class. At the beginning of a course establishing who you are and what you expect sets the foreground of what's appropriate classroom discussions.

Teaching & Learning Styles

At my college I teach in two hour segments, with an interval ten minute break. Which has taught me to deversify teaching techniques. Taking this particular MaxKnowlege course has re-enforced that. Adults 10-15 attention span was a surprise. I did not know research had reflected such a short period.

The early bird doesn't take Xanax.

I've learned that arriving early to class and greeting my students with the occasional small talk reduces stress in the environment. Also there are fewer random distractions during class than when I arrive just before class.

Ice Breacker

On the first day of class, I have found when students find out a little something about a fellow classmate(s), it seems to change the social climate of the class atmosphere from one of, say, cold, to one of social connections and relaxations. I am always looking for new ice breakers (i.e. a site where I can learn new ones). Would anyone share some of your first day of class ice breakers. Thanks!

Syllabus

I have taught in colleges where I wrote my on respective class syllabus and in those colleges where I must follow one the colleges provides. Currently, where I teach, the college provides the syllabus I must follow. I find it difficult to stay on task, so, at the beginning of each course, I add a supplement explaining what will be in concluded and exculded for the original. Question? Is there a better way?

Keeping Students Focused

This seems to be the biggest challenge for me. They always seem to be checking their phone for texts or Facebook or running around the lab area to talk to their friends in other classes. What is a good way to beat this issue?

Developing the five C"s

This struck me as putting everthing in teaching, regardless of subjuct matter in a nutshell, so to speak. In order to continue to strive for improvement in the classroom, credibility, candidness, compassion, committment and clearity is needed coupled with professional growth and development. I have made copies of these "C"'s and posted them in a noticeable place in my office for a constant reminder. As always I learned as I strive to be a better teacher.

Instructing is like the gears in a transmission.

We all have a plan on how today's lesson is going to be, but when class turns into nap time it's time to shift gears. I try one style and if that method doesn't work either the students are overburden with information or they're apathetic and can't see the importance of this knowledge. I give them an example of how knowing certain information will let them segue into better careers.

critical thinking in different chocolate methods and recipes

In my class of chocolate pastry Arts, after demos and complete video on how to temper, mold and shape chocolate, students were separated in groups then proceeded on their own ability and shared experience on those different methods and techniques. Final product and results on different practices were analyzed and explained on the outcome of quality and right timing among students.

My Instructional Style

My instructional style is very professional, yet welcoming to the students. I teach Digital Media and General Education courses, and I always dress Business Professional in the classroom. My classes and break times begin and end on time, and students are deducted points if they are late coming back from break. My classroom instructional methods are well organized. Students are advised of classroom expectations and disciplinary actions in the classroom. Although classroom expectations are somewhat strict, I am inviting to the students. I always welcome them with a smile and an upbeat attitude. I teach a Speech class where students are required to give 4 public speeches in front of the class. This is frightening to many students. However, I encourage them, and grade them based on their strengths. I also encourage students to talk to me about issues that are affecting their attendance, for example transportation, child care, etc. If they know they are going to be running late or leaving early, let me know in advance so I can advise them of the homework. Therefore, the student does not just leave in the middle of the class and miss pertinent information.

Tactile Learning

For clinical instructors, it is all about tactile sense. We always teach our students to not only use your sight, but also your sense of touch. Also how to interpret what your feeling and how to make a good decision.

Meeting New Students

When meeting new students, I always like to look them in the eye and see who looks back at me. For me, it kinda tells me who's ready and who's not. I love it when I see everyone up and ready.

Tactile

How much time for adults for on hands is too much?

Cohort groups

What are more examples of engaging with a cohort group?

Methods of instuction

We are a on hands institute, and go from reading ladder diagrams ,too drawing, then wiring boards. What would the individual segments be labeled as?

Attitude

Attitude every day plays a roll in yourself, it has to start with the front of the room. This is very important for setting the tone of the day and needs to be lived daily,( per moment ). Attitude is the axis, longitudinal support on which our, stem and root, center. Posture of our minds is seen not heard. How to we build the right attitude?

as a new instructor one thing I need to learn, suggestions plz

I,ll take any suggestions from people with more experience

First Day of Class

On the first day of class, I like to introduce myself and go over the objectives. I think it is important to make sure the students understand and know what to expect for that class. I think it helps when they find out their instructor also went to college, had kids at home, and also worked out of the home. I also explain to them that I like to have the class specifically structured to help them in their field. Joan Buesing
