Another method to project your authority is course/module/lesson introductions through (in order of effectiveness):

  1. Video-clips supported by a printable version of the narration script for each video-clip.
  2. Audio supported by a printable version of the audio script and a head-and-shoulder photograph of yourself.
  3. Text supported by a head-and-shoulder photograph of yourself.
  4. Text alone.

I learned the following:

Make sure you know how to:

  • View the class roster.
  • View student profiles.
  • Post announcements.
  • Post discussion questions.
  • Interpret the trail of responses to discussion questions.
  • Participate in Chat sessions.
  • Drop participants from Chat sessions. A circumstance under which you should do this is when students ignore your warnings and consistently deviate from the topic.
  • Respond to students' input.
  • Generate a summary of each discussion forum.
  • Delete postings from the discussion forum.
  • Review events in the calendar.
  • Post events in the calendar.
  • Manage group projects.
  • Manage the grade book. Enter as well as modify scores.

I have used video's, zoom, email, and text.  Short of that I am not familiar with all the other social media that could be used for student engagement.  I know discussion questions work for some, but most of my students like our in person LAB time.  We get a lot accomplished on those days.

When it comes to reminding students of out standing school work I have tried several methods.  Here again, talking with my voice seems to work best.

Here again on an online enviroment how do you get to connect personalities?  Getting to meet students in person will tell a lot about who they are.  I am a firm believer that you can never gain true perspective of an individual on the internet.  You can be whoever you want online, but in person that is a different story.

As instructors thinks about personality traits which may make them more successful.  However on an online enviroment, without interpersonal meetings, in an asynchronist enviroment, this is a totally useless module.  It says several things should be considered. The following are most important. A successful instructor

  • respects students; (Hard to gain online)
  • creates a sense of community; (Provided students take the time to participate)
  • is warm and caring; (Hard to have without personal contact)
  • is accessible;
  • is enthusiastic;
  • sets high expectations;
  • has a love of learning;
  • is a leader;
  • can “shift-gears”;
  • collaborates with colleagues; and
  • maintains professionalism.

Successful instructors incorporate personality… >>>

I can not get into the color personality traits.  It is hard to picture a person being a color on a spectrum wheel of all possible shades.  Because so many people have more than one color it just becomes an unbalanced painting.

BMT is a good personality test.  I have taken it several times over the past 30 years.  I found out that our personalities remain the same over time.  It would be a good test to give students and pass along to teachers to know the temperment of the student.

I am so tired of posting things that I feel like an online student.  Fed up, losing interest. and what ever happen to video's and photo's to keep up our interest.  If we follow the way these course are laid out for our students we will lose them within the first 5 days.

I have learned that as a teacher in the online enviroment there is a lot to consider.  However it does say that the instution should provide someone who can build online course for the classroom.  So I am not sure why we as instructors need to know all the options.

Online students may have attitude problems when it comes to active learning. They may find online courses more difficult than “regular” courses, do not want or know how to critically think, and may view the instructor as “not teaching.”

I personal experienced this 3 terms ago.  Students didn't like when Covid hit and we went completely online.
