Robert, I agree absolutely. I'd even go farther to say that it's worth completely withholding any value judgment until the interview is completed both so they stay open minded, and so that they don't have to concentrate on hiding what they're thinking. Elizabeth Kemler
Robert, Cover letters are not easy stuff. I think you'll get a lot of mileage though out of using what's available in this course-you can print out some of the PDF's. Elizabeth Kemler
Karen, This is another reason to bring in people from the field-either former students or employers-to emphasize for the students how very important it is to do your best even when you're not being paid for your work. Elizabeth Kemler
Karen, This is very true, and why it is especially important to work with students consistently on their communication skills; it will help them in every aspect of their career. Elizabeth Kemler
Karen, I think the regular contact is really helpful for keeping students on track and inspired to keep going. And certainly focusing on any positive feedback will give them an extra boost. Elizabeth Kemler
Karen, I agree on your point. And bringing former students in to speak is also very motivating for students seeking work in their respective fields. Elizabeth Kemler
Sharon, That is very good advice. It sounds though like your students need more motivation. Do you have any ideas about what else you might be able to do to help them appreciate what a good opportunity an externship can be? Elizabeth Kemler
Sharon, It's certainly a good thing to keep on top of them-making sure they send out lots of resumes. I'm wondering though, beyond that, what kinds of things you do to keep them motivated, and from losing hope. Perhaps something like sending out inspiring emails every week. Elizabeth Kemler
Mary, Very true. Good interview skills are really just good communication skills, which are essential in any position we have. Elizabeth Kemler
Mary, I agree..even when you know these things, you can get off track-especially if you're in a job you don't love. It's worth it to continually check ourselves. Elizabeth Kemler
