The availability is key..when students can count on you to listen and encourage them, it really goes a long way toward boosting their confidence.
I like your emphasis on the non-judgmental approach; this is really crucial to create a safe-feeling space for students where they can feel comfortable making mistakes. I also agree with as much practice as possible; it's easy to think, after one successful mock interview, that we got it and don't need to practice anymore. Of course the more we practice, the more natural and comfortable we become.
Absolutely. I always advocate for a natural style of interviewing-essentailly being a polished version of yourself; this is really just effective communication which is applicable to any and all interpersonal interaction.
Hi Gary, You'll find some great tools for exactly this type of exercise in the Resources section for Mod 1.
Gary, I think this is a great point. I would say that's the case with most people-certainly myself. Particularly when things are challenging, as job searches usually are, we need to continually remind ourselves of the pot at the end of the rainbow (so to speak). Elizabeth Kemler
Gary, I agree with this point. I had always had a somewhat negative view of networking-it sounded like 'shmoozing' to me but in the description I try to make the point that it is more like what you are suggesting-a hello at Starbucks-a comfortable conversation where you can at an opportune point, bring up the fact that you're looking for work. Gary, I love this idea! I now wish I had included it in the course. With all the things we have to attend to in our lives, its so easy to overlook or simply forget the many things that could potentially be good for our resumes, cover letters, or even just fodder for talking points in interviews. Gary, I think you are really doing your students a great service with this kind of consistent encouragement and polishing of their skills. Elizabeth Kemler
