About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Erich, The more you can connect the dots between classroom content and the real world the better. By doing so you increase the value of the course in the minds of students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Suzanne, Great list and right on target. Thank you for sharing these with us as I know they will be of benefit to other instructors, especially those just starting their teaching careers. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sherry, I use graduates as guest speakers a lot in my classes for the reason you mention. When they share how the course content helped them to be successful in the workplace the current students get really excited and start to see more value to the course content. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Sherry, Good point because as learning leaders we are models for our students as well as our field. We need to bring not only our experience and expertise to the classroom but our enthusiasm for what we are teaching. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Katherine, I know you will like the results you get from this approach. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lynne, Like your approach and I do understand the challenges you face to get your students to buy into the course. I teach a required course that the students for the most part do not see any value in. It is my task each session to convince that that the course has value and application to their future. Doing as you are doing I am able to get them engaged and then the learning really takes off. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Malek, I use this same method because I like to chat with the students to get a read on the mood of the students and that helps me to know if I need to make any adjustments in my approach for that day. Good strategy to use and I wish you continued success with it. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Amy, So true and so important. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Amy, Right you are because enthusiasm is catching so we need to bring it to our classes and spread it around. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
LaTanya, The more senses you can get the students to use the better. You are involving a number of the senses with this method and showing them both application and relevancy in the content you are offering. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
