About me

Please allow me this opportunity to welcome everyone to The Lounge! As someone who has had the honor of being in career education and corporate training for thirty years (gee, it makes me feel much older!), I can honestly say that I am the happiest professionally when having the opportunity to interact with fellow career educators - whether it be a training event, webinar, or medium such as this where we can collaboratively share our thoughts.

Activity

Jennifer, Thanks for bringing into the discussion the importance of the school's mission. The mission and core values of an institution are at the heart of a compliance culture. Jay Hollowell
Dawn, You have noted the first step in developing a culture of compliance mindset - being aware of the standards and policies from the onset! Bravo! Additionally as you referenced, being individually part of a compliance culture is affected by our own personal beliefs and values. Jay Hollowell
Justin, Thanks for your comments. Transparency is key and so much of what we do in the classroom and lab, in concert with the professional relationship we have with our students, is a major foundation for the compliance culture. Jay Hollowell
Elizabeth, This is an excellent response! The culture most certainly depends upon the team effort and approach. Without it, there is, as you note, a lack of cohesiveness and, thus, a lack of consistency that can undermine student trust. Thanks for your comments! Jay Hollowell
Thanks Ronda, You're right, when things feel forced, it tends to take on more of the characteristics of a regulatory environment as opposed to a culture. Jay Hollowell
Ronda, Thanks for your comments! Wanting to comply for the right reasons is a fundamental characteristic of a compliance culture. Jay Hollowell
Christopher, And as you note... "Because of choice..." That says it all! :-) Jay Hollowell
Christopher, This is an excellent point. Once a student's or potential student's trust in a school has been compromised, it very much can lead to mistrust across the board - and a student may therefore be demotivated to not pursue their career dreams and goals. Jay Hollowell
Christopher, Thanks for your observation, Christopher. I have seen instructors exaggerate something to gain favor with students. This not only creates grounds for possible misrepresentation, which can go much further, but it also, as you note, diminish the reputation of the instructor. Jay Hollowell
Christopher, Thanks Christopher, being honest with students about such things manages expectations and serves as another anchor for trust. Jay Hollowell
