Activity

Strategie for active learning requires high standards with targeted feedback for further engagement at the level expected to meet competency. The end result is that the student knows 'how' to apply knowledge, not just with memorizing a fact or concept.

Ownership of learning by the student plays a key role in their success; being self-directed with learning is beneficial with active learning through self-reflection of a concept and helps to build a sense of community within the class. This requires planning 'up front' with a well designed, well structured online course and understanding of the features of a LMS that 'invites' enagement of the learners.

Lots of great information with Universal Design. With having to do this myself for every module for every 16-week course was very time consuming, resources were limited so challenging, yet obtainable. I have incorporated all of the tps offerened in one format or another; very informative and validating to my overall course structure and design, thank you.

New learning was the use of WAVE to check for images and web pages for accessibility, sound like a great tool to utilize in my online courses. Lots of software available; however, the cost may be prohibited for many so need to include multiple formats with course content

Since I have been teaching for a while, I have had to take many training sessions in regards to the process when students disclose a disability. THe 'tricky' part is what thes student vs. leadership view as reasonable accommodations and this is often a point of debate as to what the request may be from the student. With testing accommodations, the extreme end of accommodations is rather impractical, at times, so a that a one hour exam is taking upwards of -6 hours to proctor just one student based on all of the 'requirements' in the plan as devised by… >>>

I have used Universal Design principles in all of my theory based courses with a high level of retention and successful outcomes.  My MSN students who are taking courses with being a nurse educator are often surprised, unaware of what constitutes a 'disability' for a student in their own classrooms so a steep learning curve with curriculum design.

Microblogging needs to have well structured guidelines to fit the purpose of why it is being incorporated as supplement learning. If following, must be professional organizations related to nursing.

Social media hosting/sharing sites can only be effective with learning when guidelines are established for use as an assessment activity for evaluation learning outcomes. Thus, social media polices are a valued part with using this strategy in your own course; this includes addressing integrity, roles, expectations and consequences for compromising the guidelines.  I have used blogs and wikis in courses and they were only effective with a firm set of guidelines for professionalism and monitoring of the site as some students wanted to use them a social, personal means of networking.

Use of social media can be effective learning when it is well defined with how it will be incorporated into the course content and must have a purpose as it pertains to assessment and evaluation with meeting learning outcomes

Esch course requires multiple assessments to effectively evaluate competency with mastering the outcomes. The goal is determining what is really needed a to 'fit' with assessing that learning.  Formative assessments is a solid tool in which to provide authentic feedback to enhance the level of the learning and with processing the key concepts. It is about striking a balance for both the educator and the student.
