David, You have the right idea, for the wrong reason. HIPAA regulations don't apply here, but FERPA regulations do. And FERPA says that sensitive information should be shared only when there is a "legitimate educational interest". As an instructor, you don't need to know the details of the student's disability -- only that he/she HAS a disability and will need appropriate accommodations as assigned by someone there at the institution. David, Actually, no. The laws protect "people with disabilities." You either ARE, or ARE NOT, a person with a disability. The law makes no distinction regarding the quality or extent of disability. As such, each student with a disability is entitled to whatever level of protection (nondiscrimination) that is appropriate to their disability-related needs. Dr. Jane Jarrow

Braden, Agreed -- as is true for ANY student, with or without a disability! Dr. Jane Jarrow
Chris , You aren't likely to know which students with ADHD have/have not been given medication. As you suggest here, it really is irrelevant to you, as an instructor. It is a private choice for the student to make. Dr. Jane Jarrow

Michael, I agree. In fact, I'll go you one better! I do not believe the college should take a stance on ANY student and job employment. Making sure they know what to expect is just fine. Limiting anyone based on YOUR question about their capabilities is just wrong! Dr. Jane Jarrow

Sabahudin, That's a great attitude to take -- the idea that something can be done, should be done, and that everyone will want to respond. I hope you find the folks at your institution to be as open about possibilities as you are Students with disabilities will be the benefactors of your efforts Dr. Jane Jarrow

Sabahudin, You are correct. That is exactly the reason that extended time is provided -- to level the playing field. Dr. Jane Jarrow

Sabahudin, That's the key -- that the student learn coping strategies so that when they become an employee they know what support to ask for and what they can do themselves to make things work. Dr. Jane Jarrow

Sabahudin, I love your enthusiasm -- and I agree with your premise! Dr. Jane Jarrow
