Hi Lisa, Would you choose the online student because you feel that this person would be self-motivated? It is refreshing to see that some of the stereotypes of online learning are finally fading away. :) Jane

Hi Carrie, All things being equal, the onsite and online courses are offered through accredited universities, do you think there will be a difference in the quality of education offered to each student? I love what you said about the student being "made to learn." I have been teaching for many years and have still discovered no method for making my students learn. :) I know what you mean, though. You don't want to think that your potential employee was simply pushed forward. Could this happen in a traditional program as well as an online one? I am interested in… >>>

John, I am pleased that your found this course helpful. Best of luck to you in designing your online curriculum. :) Jane
John, It seems that you are an instructor who cares very much that his students learn. You are sensitive to the learning styles of your students and you accommodate those learning styles by having a variety of assessment methods. My guess is that you are one of the favorites at your campus. Enjoy your holidays, Jane
Typing skills are definately one of the problems with synchronous discussion. Another problem is grammar and spelling. For all of these issues, asynchronous may be a better alternative. I think online learning is getting real close to finally being able to design courses that appeal to various learning styles. Jane
John, I agree. Merry Christmas to you and your family, Jane
Caroline, If the development of the course is outsourced, the design specification document would be provided to the development company and would contain all of the requirements of that course. This document should be complete and clearly written so that development can go smoothly and the instructor, or institution, would have a course that meets their needs. Make sense? Let me know if you have any questions. It was nice having you in this class. :) Jane
Caroline, As with massage therapy, there are so many courses being taught online today that no one ever imagined could be. Is online learning optional for your students, or do they take the theory classes online and the hands-on classes onsite? If required for theory classes, how well do your students respond to online learning? Are they fairly receptive to it? I am interested in your experiences :) Jane

Hi Caroline, You bring up a good point, something I have never thought of, about asynchronous posting being used to allow "those who are not so adept to kind of mimick others work until they begin to understand the concepts." In my own online learning experiences, if I wasn't quite sure what type of response the instructor wanted, I would check out what my classmates had to say before formulating my own discussion response. At your school, do students have the choice of attending synchronous or asynchronous classes or do all classes used a combined approach? Thanks for your input… >>>

Hi John, Since you are an experienced online instructor, you have probably seen students at both ends of the spectrum; those who are dedicated and self-starters as well as those who need quite a bit of external motivation. You bring up a good point that "a person who has successfully completed an accredited online class has certainly demonstrated" that they have the autonomy to do the job that you have to offer. Do you think that we are past the days when online learning is somehow seen as substandard? I am interested in your thoughts. :) Jane
