Linda - That's a great idea. It's also a good way to introduce new information to help them self-discover. We use Game Show Pro, a great software package from Learningware that has Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Millionaire and Tic Tac To... I think I'm forgetting one. Anyway, they have a special pricing version for schools, including career colleges. Drop me an email at lou@russellmartin.com if you want the contact information. Thanks! Lou

Thanks for asking! Different size and color Post-its are a mainstay for me. Colored markers or pens around. Depending on what you are teaching, it's nice to have a large table in the center of the room for discussion, then tables around the walls with computers on them so the cables don't get out of control. Make sure the sound system is good for the music and if possible, have it come from the back of the room (auditory people who might be bothered by the music tend to sit in the front). I pass out pipe cleaners occasionally for… >>>

Padawans...I'm embarrassed - I should have known that, Jedi Master. Lou Russell
Ron - Tell me more about this. It sounds like you are very conscious of what is interesting to you as you learn the topic and carry that over to your learners. I think that is a wonderful technique, and one I share. At the same time, you and I will stay mindful that not everyone learns like we do. Lou Russell

Kevin - It's fun talking with you! I have also been accused by people in the same way. "Please don't use those silly tricks on the executives" - I do anyway, they love it. "Isn't Accelerated Learning just giving people little toys? Just playing music? Blah, blah?" Nope, AL is about using the individual way a person learns best to learn. Everything in my classroom may look 'fun and light' but it is (mostly) designed specifically to target brains AND meet the learning objectives. Games for games sake are wrong. Activities to improve evaluations are wrong. ANYTHING that improves learning… >>>

Steve - Sorry, I think I missed this one somehow. Isn't it amazing how important word choice is? A simple choice of words can create a power to learn, or a power to avoid learning. Thanks for staying positive for your learners. Lou Russell
Ronald - It seems you are responsible for leading many other faculty. It might be helpful to get them together to create a couple of 'frames': game formats or ideas that can be applied to different topics easily. How will you motivate them to change the way they teach now? To be it bluntly, why should they? Lou Russell
Ronald - That's exactly right. I like the way you've pointed out that multiple intelligences can be taken care of with a single activity. Lou Russell
Kevin - I'd love to hear how it works out. I think it helps when you make sure learners have intrapersonal time first (structures, say, 5 minutes) to figure out their own solutions, then get in a team for interpersonal (say 20 minutes) with the instructions for everyone to share. This helps reduce the likelihood of a coup. I don't think there is anything more fun than watching a game teach a group of people without me! Lou Russell

Kevin - Well, that's a pretty wonderful thing. I have always taught technical methods as well as software for awhile. Unless the learners can buy-in to the WHY - through a story of how a business will use it, or something - it can become pretty useless knowledge. I once knew a guy who memorized the LOTUS 123 keystrokes for file retrieve (/fr) never knowing what it meant. If he mistyped, he had no idea how to recover. The clock is tough on us in today's world - learning falls victim to it all to often. I like to say… >>>
