I have learned that knowledge building is not simply information exchange but rather the working of ideas into meaningful concepts. Also, that it increases autonomous learning skills, students become more aware of how they learn and what they want to learn. Finally, I learned that it seems as though students need more attention in the online learning environment.

Reply to Korinne Toadvine's post:I like that you added with freedom comes responsibility. I have problems with students not utilizing good time managemnt with their asynchronous classes. They end up frantically doing all the assignments in the last day or two of or on the due dates. It is difficult to not nag them constantly.

It is important that students evaluate their own needs and learning styles prior to enrolling in an asynchronous class. Students should be encouraged to utilize online learning style tools such as VARk and True Colors.

Online instructors should clearly and effectively illustrate expectations via the syllabus and well-written rubrics.

Student engagement is vital to a successful online course. Instructor need to ensure that students participate and communicate frequently with each other.

In online communication, instructors should:

  • investigate and choose the most appropriate method of communication
  • Clearly announce how and when communication may occur
  • Provide clear and detailed instructions for communication
  • Set clear expectations for the instructor and students
  • Encourage all students to participate in the communication

Ensuring that all students have a sufficient and reliable connection for communication is critical in online learning. It is important to utilize communication techniques from a variety of resources.

Critical thinking is not something that many students learn in K-12. Students must have access to assignments that go beyond memorization.

Technical problems in online are a huge problem. Nothing frustrates students/instrucotrs and rerails a class quicker.

Giving students autonomy doesn't mean the teacher is losing control.
