Step back and think about the lesson you just gave! Was it something that would have motivated you? If not why!! If you wouldn't want to come back what makes you think the students would feel any different. Also remember they probably know very little about the subject. Did you overwhelm them or make them feel stupid? If you did you probably won't see those student again. Keep them motivated so they WANT to come back.

Don't forget why you have the job.

I've seen to many instructors forget why they are where they are. To many get in an ego trip. They want to show the students just how smart they are compared to the students. Just remember with out the students you wouldn't have a job.

Keeping it fun

If the instructor is not enjoying the class the students won't either. Be creative with the subject and find something about it that could make it a fun time with a little extra effort. That will keep them coming back.

Student support

How do we get the students to use our support system? Most are afraid or to embarassed to use it. Most won't take advantage of tutoring or the food pantry, even if it's offered in a private setting, for the fear someone might find out.

First Day of Class

This is why we need to be prepared for our class before the first time we see them. If possible go over your roll sheet and check up to see how diversfified your class is going to be. Most of this information is available if you know where to look and spend the time to look for it. You can also take notes during the early part of the class to help you plan future classes. That's great. Don't you wish ALL your students were that attentive. You may not get anything done if they all wanted you to stop unless it was at the same time. Have a potty state change break.

Keeping Them Interested

You need to plan your lesson around the classes ability to pay attention. You can't please everybody but you need to keep everyone involved.

Setting standards and expectations

It's always easier to give them some slack later. If you don't show your in charge you'll never be able to. Start out firm and if they deserve it you can lighten up.
