Utilizing an array of ways to put concepts across has helped. The quiet student who just wants the notes, the talker who likes the discussion, the "I'm bored" usually likes associated videos, or activities, and the "on stage" student likes the group work.

I have found in addition to the syllabus, an expectation sheet from the instructor detailing; communication, assignment turn in, and so forth, outlines a responsibility to the student.

Introducing the grading system for each area, gives the student a plan to utilize and assess their individual progress and work toward optimal learning
When students get "off track", redirecting them I find easier when I incorporate what they are talking about to the orignal topic or question
I prefer Power Point and give each student a paper copy so they do not spend time taking notes and concentrate on listening

Being prepared for class is showing the students your motivation to for their success...it displays organization to maximize the time you have to present material
Utilizing several types of assessments gives each individual student who excel in one type, the opportunity to increase skill in another. It also reaffirms the knowledge taught

This gives them the opportunity to eval themselves in how they are progressing, if there studying style if effective, and what they need to modify.
The best way to get all students involved versus those who are more passive, I have found discussion groups of no more than three, sometimes even two will bring out more positive involvement

The different styles need to be exercised for each new piece of information to ensure each student not only learns through their own personal style but is exposed to alternate ways of learning
