I believe each Professor/teacher/instructor is different in that they have their preferred way to test but at the same time may not have their option. Their institute may have a standard. Here where I work, I've seen all types of ways to test to include a system where the test is put up on a screen and each student answers the question from their seat like playing the game jeopardy. I believe a combination of true/false and multiple choice are significant but as you climb the ranks in education/college they should turn inturn essay type questions.

I don't always feel that a test does any good. Some folks like myself hear the word test or final or quiz and I go into a panic. I don't want a student that is in class for 10 days going through pure panic for 9 days just thinking about the last 10. You will loose them right up front. Other ways to test are oral or put the questions on the board and pick and choose students to answer them. After all, we are not here to fail students, we are here to educate them.

I work at the Joint Special Operations University, when we see the class list we break the students out into groups. We seperate them from branch of service and origin of country. When put into working groups, they tend to break their shell so to speak and start participating more as they all have different areas to draw from with their back ground and experience. Then on day 3 when then are all set, we'd change their seating assisgments after they left for the day and make them sit somewhere else in the class on day 4. They never know… >>>

Motivation might just be what a student needs. I'm not saying a kick in the pants but maybe a small shove on the shoulder. Break the ice, get them out of their shell. You have also have to keep your own content / presentation motivated or you will loose your students. Motivation Motivation Motivation... Very important element to keep class upbeat and driving on. If you are not motivated as an instructor, how can you expect your students to stay motivated over a 2 week course.

Always focus on what your students have to bring to the table. You will loose the entire class if you show no focus on them. They are nervous enough having to speak. Let them know that what they have to say is important.
As an instructor, you have to respect every one on the same level. Respect their opinions, respect their belief's, and respect their input. You don't want to loose a student for disrespect. Students will quickly note how you treat one of their own which will inturn be the outcome if you keep or loose the class. Bottom line; just use the tratis you were taught at home as a child. Treats others with respect but most of all, Treat others as you want to be treated.

I work at the Joint Special Operations University, I am not an instructor at this time but do attend many courses as a student and or extra hand. When we have courses that include international students, young students and older students, depending on how many of each catagory, they are broken up into groups to include one of each so to speak, in order to break them out of their shell in order to make them become one. Different ideas and I've been there's break down the protection sheild and gets them talking. It works well when you get them… >>>

Stick to what is in the syllabus. By doing so, you will keep the students in the same areana. If you're all over the map, then your students will be all over the map.
Upon meeting the class for the 1st time, one should keep it very professional. Don't let your guard down and show favoritism to a friend who is now a student. Set the tone upfront. I've been in classes where a co worker was the Course director and called me out by my 1st name on day one, folks then begun to look at me as 1. a spy and 2. like I was the teacher's pet and would pass not matter what. Keep it professional.
A 2 - 3 minute "Introduce Yourself" will enable each student to give a brief picture on them self and allow fellow students to pick out things that they may have in common which in turn will form a bond through out the class time. I feel this is very important.
