Roger, That is wonderful! So many times, we forget to be really proactive with these issues and they make such a difference in the student being able to persist. Susan Backofen
Mark, I love the idea of proactively mixing with the students so consistently the first week. Food, of course, always helps :) Susan Backofen
Jamie, Wonderful! As one of the 'last' instructors, you no doubt have some wonderful advice and stories you can provide to the new students that encourage them! Susan Backofen
Mark, Excellent. This is exactly the type of transitional 'hand off' that is helpful for faculty and others to assist the student in achieving their goals. Great job! Susan Backofen
Mark, You bring up an important point about having orientations at times where people can attend. Offering students multiple times to increase attendance is excellent. Susan Backofen
Cheryl , Well, ideally there is a 'joint' relationship built from application through drop and add where the admissions person along with their retention/advisor are working with the new student. That makes for an easier transition once classes start to work with the person they will be dealing with during their education. Susan Backofen
james, The extended orientation is an excellent format; allowing students to more gradually grasp the resources available. Susan Backofen
Michael, It certainly sounds like you have a great method of dealing with a variety of students. I completely agree that trust plays an important role in retention. Susan Backofen
Jennifer, I like how you organize the folders, seems very helpful and intuitive. I especially appreciate that you include the families. They are such an important part of supporting retention. Susan Backofen
james, This sounds like a great program...and having them meet with faculty in their first classroom is a wonderful way to acclimate them. Susan Backofen
