Travia, Excellent~! Spending time individually with the students to get to know them is a very strong signal that you care about their success. Susan Backofen
Theresa, Great idea. I have found that the biggest obstacle to students seeking assistance is getting them to the point where they will admit it to someone. Susan Backofen
David, Wonderful! This is a great example of reinforcing goals and 'plans' across departments. Susan Backofen
Teresa, I really like closing your orientation by 'making' them real students with books, etc.! Susan Backofen
FERDINAND, I always love having graduates some and speak with students. It gives energy and helps keep them motivated. Susan Backofen
Robert, I agree. If students understand they are not the only ones struggling with these challenges, it is helpful for them and builds a support system. Susan Backofen
Robert, Agreed. As discussed, and especially adults, students are not happy with their current situation which prompts them to enroll. Taking that situation and building upon it is a very healthy practice. And there is always something positive to be learned from a bad situation. Another skill we can help them acquire. Susan Backofen
sheila, Having an exercise that builds 'community' and also gets them up and moving is great! Susan Backofen
Troy, This is another great idea! Having employers participate reinforces so much of what we do in our programs. Having an 'outside expert' tell them is excellent. Susan Backofen
Robert, Great idea for those situations where students are applied for long periods leading up to the start of classes. This helps them to keep them engaged with the institution and 'resell' them (we need to remember our competitors are selling them all the time they are applicants). Susan Backofen
