Gretchen, Knowing that the goal of Admissions personnel is to enroll, is there anything that can be done during the interview process and after that may increase the employability of the persons enrolled? Can you think any ways that Career Services can partner with Admissions at these points to increase the likelihood? Sheri Leach

Patricia G. Wilson, I agree completely. This is an area where Career Services and the Education department must work together to ensure that the sites that students are placed on are good sites and if a site is not appropriate, a student is to be placed elsewhere. It is a best practice for Career Services to stay in contact with the students while they are on externship. You want to maintain your relationship with them, ask how the experience is going, do they expect to be offered a position, and if so you can counsel them on the benefits of… >>>

Kayla , Agreed. Do you have any best practices that you can share about networking? Since most of our students haven't done it and are uncomfortable networking, it makes sense to hold a workshop or proved material to the students so they know what to expect and have a quick guide to follow. Any examples you can share? Sheri Leach
Patricia G. Wilson, What a great name for your sessions! Can you provide some specifics of how it is conducted? Sheri Leach
Kayla , This is a great best practice. This way the students are introduced to career Services from the beginning and the trust and bond can begin to develop. It is then up to the Career Services professionals to grow that relationship while the student is on campus. A few ways to do this, email, Facebook or tweets to check in, a quick hello in the hall or classroom, invite a group to meet with you for coffee. Any other ideas? Sheri Leach
Patricia G. Wilson, That's wonderful. Many institutions struggle with this. Please share how your students are exposed to the industry training thru your program. Sheri Leach
Kayla , Community partnerships are so crucial and having the time to build the relationships is paramount. Having someone designated to this is wonderful. Have you thought about how this person will interact and work with the existing Career Service folks on your campus? Sheri Leach
Patricia G. Wilson, We can't get away from soft skills. Classroom activities are a great way to help here. Have you considered having your students role play interviews, practicing answering a phone call and taking a message or greeting and helping a customer? Sheri Leach
